“In 2007 Astralwerks released the ‘chiptune’ compilation ’8-Bit Operators : A Tribute To The Music Of Kraftwerk’, a fascinating collection of cover versions that uses 8-Bit technology as its primary compositional tool. Curated by chiptune composer and foremost authority Jeremy Kolosine, this collection was released with the blessing and participation of Kraftwerk themselves. Much has been written about the ‘chiptune’ scene and this project in particular, as a whole new generation of kids is now adopting the retro-futurism of 8-Bit, intrigued no doubt by its seemingly limited compositional value compared to 21st century digital music tools. However nobody until now, has been able to summarize the appeal and background of chiptune quite like the ‘controller’ himself.

Recently our friends at Consequence Of Sound interviewed Jeremy about the genesis of the project, his love for the medium, his encounter with Ralf Hutter of Kraftwerk and much more! Listen to this insightful and articulate feature, and don’t forget to discover the project for yourself at 8bitoperators.com

“Continuing with our discussion on the evolution of chip music, we veer into what was behind the making of the Kraftwerk tribute compilation. Kolosine talks about Kraftwerk’s involvement in the project, specifically co-leader Ralf Hutter’s input, as well as his reaction to people’s befuddlement of “covering an electronic band even more electronically.”
